To Look At World Literature and the Great Masters from Amed (DSM)

22 April-13 May 2012
Sülüklü Han, Diyarbakır

Organized by: Diyarbakır Arts Center (DSM)
Partner: Lîs Publishing House

The program titled To Look At World Literature and the Great Masters from Amed departed from the observation that, as particularly a result of the intense activities and production in the field of literature, the city of Diyarbakır was feeling closer to the idea of world literature, and that the volume of translation and intercultural dialogue in this field was rapidly increasing. Within the scope of this, in order to indicate the point cultural mobility has reached in the city, a series of literary conversations were held that could form examples to which practices Diyarbakır adopted to take part in world literature.

During the 4-week event series that began on 22 April 2012 with the organization of the Diyarbakır Arts Center and in collaboration with Sülüklü Han, the great masters of world literature became topics of debate, from Walt Whitman, the poet of the American dream and freedom, to Ezra Pound, a life dedicated to poetry, and from Edgar Allan Poe, the founder of the modern short story to T. S. Eliot, the father of 20th century modernist poetry. Speakers at the 4-week series of interviews included Kawa Nemir, Veysi Erdoğan, Şener Özmen, Azad Ziya Eren, Dilawer Zeraq and Samî Hêzil. The events continued with performances by the Kurdish heavy metal group Ferec, the Kurdish rock music group Siya Şevê, Dodan and Mehmet Atlı. Books of the authors discussed during the interviews, translated into Kurdish by Kawa Nemir and published by the Bajar Publishing House were also distributed to the audience free of charge.
