Tandem Turkey 2018-2019

A new round of Tandem Turkey, co-designed with and primarily for Tandem alumni, has started. This round runs from June 2018 to July 2019.

Following the previous round of Tandem Turkey, the programme team organised a brainstorm meeting to discuss current needs and challenges with Tandem alumni from all four previous rounds as well as representatives from different regional programmes. Together, we developed this new round in the hope of effectively supporting civil society and independent cultural platforms through Tandem.

What is new about this round is the target group: we primarily opened the call for applications within the Tandem Network to members who have finished a Tandem programme. However, in order to multiply the number of beneficiaries and remain open for new exchanges and opportunities for empowerment, alumni from Turkey and the existing Tandem Network have a chance to deliver their experiences by engaging emerging cultural practitioners within their local working environment: with a ‘sister colleague’. These sister colleagues can be one of the participants’ colleagues from the organisation or from another organisation they closely work with. This allows the alumni to take the initiative and introduce new members to the growing Tandem Network through this round.

Another new component of the target group is the inclusion of a new geography: The Tandem team also organised a roundtable meeting with Iranian cultural practitioners and made a research trip to Iran during the last round of Tandem Turkey, resulting in co-designing, together with Tandem alumni from the existing Tandem Network, this tailor-made programme which consolidates alumni from Turkey’s need for sustainable support with our wish to develop cultural partnerships between Turkey and Iran. In the short term, this is an initial experience to develop a practice of working together and extending Tandem’s international network.

Based on the quality of the application, the applicants’ motivation and matching potential with a partner organisation, a balanced mix of 36 cultural managers (9 from Turkey with their 9 sister colleagues and up to 9 from Tandem Network countries and Iran, with their 9 sister colleagues) were invited to the Partner Forum between 25 - 29 July in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Organisations based in different cities of Turkey (Ankara, Antakya, Antalya, Istanbul, Izmir, and Mardin), Greece, Lebanon, Hungary, Egypt, France, Ukraine and Iran participated in the Partner Forum to meet, and match with an organisation of their interest. In total 9 Tandems (this time as quarto teams rather than duos) were formed consisting of 36 participants.

The programme is also newly structured in three stages. We are in the midst of the first stage, which started with the Partner Forum in July. Participants have three months to conduct their reciprocal study visits to each other’s’ cities before the ‘Reflection Meeting’ at the end of October. (See more details on the programme format under the question How does the programme work?)

During the study visits, they will have the chance to get directly involved with the community and the activities of their partner organisation as well as the unique opportunity to present their organisation, communities and cultural producers to the hosting organisation and community. After getting familiar with the working environment and the current local context, cultural managers can decide whether or not to implement a collaboration project with their Tandem partner and submit a collaboration project grant application.

We are very excited to experiment together with the alumni to try out a new format and open the Tandem experience to a new region for the fifth round.

There are three stages in this round, and selected participants apply for the next step after they complete the previous one. Stage I consists of the Partner Forum, study visits and Reflection Meeting. Then the participants, who decide to work together, submit their collaboration proposals to continue Stage II, which includes Kick-off Meeting, implementation of collaboration projects and Closing Meeting. Stage III offers the participants the opportunity to circulate their collaboration outputs in Tandem Network localities.

Tandem Turkey is an initiative of European Cultural Foundation (Amsterdam) and MitOst e.V. (Berlin) in collaboration with Anadolu Kültür (Istanbul).
