Antep: Post-Earthquake Assessment of Architectural Heritage at Risk

"Antep: Post-Earthquake Assessment of Architectural Heritage at Risk", which we prepared as part of the Support to the Armenia-Turkey Normalisation Process: Rapid Responses (ATNP: Rapid Responses), brought together experts from Armenia and Turkey for workshops and field studies. Experts from the fields of architecture, civil engineering, urban and regional planning, archaeology and art history participated in the fieldwork in partnership with the Association for the Protection of Cultural Heritage [KMKD].

The experts worked on the reporting of the data collected during the preliminary research and site visits, and they reported on 123 historic buildings and sites. The data obtained from this study, in which we examined the post-earthquake conditions of various structures in the central and rural areas of Antep, is published in Turkish and English

The information collected during historical research and field analyses, the architectural features of the building in question as well as its history, function(s), relationship with its surroundings, and the problems with its materials and construction were recorded in tables by experts. Each report presents an architectural description of the building followed by its current condition, a post-earthquake risk analysis and recommendations. Architectural conservation methods were mentioned in the context of each building's condition and unique context.

This research fulfils the requirements of the discipline of historic preservation with meticulous study and documentation; identification of the values and problems of the surviving cultural assets of production, trade, education, and cultural life; and ultimately contributes to our understanding of the multi-layered past of the Antep.

The report aims to contribute to the methods of research and conservation of the cultural heritage of the region after the earthquake.

The Eastern Armenian version of the report will be published soon.
