Episode 2
How are trans and intersex children being ignored?
In this episode of Justice Atlas 2, we discuss with lawyer Efruz Kaya, psychiatrist Koray Başar and historian Nazan Maksudyan how adults might ignore children's autonomy. We address this topic through the experiences of trans and intersex children with their ignored historicity.
We talk about the reasons why children's will and actions are suppressed by the family, medicine and law, based on the articles published in KaosGL by Can and Belgin Günay from LISTAG's book Kendimi Bildim Bileli. Some of the questions we seek answers to in the episode in which the texts are vocalized by actors Hakan Emre Ünal and Nergis Öztürk are as following:
Why are children viewed as either innocent or as quasi-subjects that can be manipulated? How do trans children create a crack in this dichotomy? What role does child distinctiveness play in law and medicine? What has the medicalization of bodily developments led to in history? What does things being done to intersex and trans children say about adults? How is ‘the principle of the best interests of the child’ shaped by patriarchal protectionism? What are some of the areas of resistances belonging to the LGBTI children work against the cooperation of the state and family?
