Episode 10

Methods of recollection (Turkish)

In this episode of Justice Atlas, we will be talking about ways of recollection together with publisher Rober Koptaş, immersive media artist, filmmaker Deniz Tortum and director Ceylan Özgün Özçelik. Publishing, virtual reality (VR) and cinema will be disscussed as tools of bringing past injustices to the attention of today’s audience. The guest speakers reflect on the possibilities and limits of the methods they employ while producing their respective works focusing on the events before and after the 1915 Armenian Genocide, the pogrom of 6-7 September 1955 and the Madımak massacre of 2 July 1993.

Some of the questions to be approached in this episode are as follows:

What lies at the basis of the efforts to remember and to remind? What distinguishes the sovereign's ways of recollection from those of people who generate counter-memories? What kind of vulnerability does the act of remembering involve? How do qualities of the media used trigger remembering? How do bodily and mental remembering differ? What does an effort to recollect a past that hasn't actually passed tell us about empathy? What happens to the one that reminds after the act of recollection?
